At Align Recruitment we believe in giving candidates as much information as possible to ensure an increased chance of success at whatever you are trying to do. If you are looking for a change of career the following tips should give you some ideas on how you can succeed, for tips on interview techniques or being a fantastic temp, scroll down!

• Consider what you actually were interested in as a child or teenager as a possible career path.

• Review pros and cons of previous roles – travel, desk bound, people, duties, culture, industry, systems, politics, structure, salary and conditions etc

• Review possible industry related products/services that you would like to be involved with.

• Review possible companies within those areas that you see as credible, respected, excellent conditions, culture, career opportunity

• Endeavour to determine what level you would ultimately like to reach in management, career, society etc

• Determine the range of salary that you will accept

• Register your specific details and only your key wants with Seek and myCareer as minimum. Investigate other relevant industry / recruitment job boards.

• Conduct search of internet for industry specific recruitment specialists

• Talk to those close to you (mentors and respected friends – look for highest profile / connected points of reference) or previous management (best possible referees) to gain thoughts on where the world sees you best fit.

• Contact these people with ‘real’ request for assistance. i.e. nominate potential companies or industries, roles, scope to enable them to actually target potential contacts. Do not be too broad when requesting referral assistance. Help guide them down your desired path.

• Consider approaching those contacts made via previous applications and interviews.

• Create a comfortable timeframe for which to seek a career, budget accordingly, or consider as loan/investment to relieve financial pressure and implications of appearance or conduct in interview

• Contact this circle with ‘real’ request for assistance. i.e. nominate potential companies or industries, roles, scope to enable them to actually target potential contacts. Do not be too broad when requesting referral assistance. Help guide them down your desired path. (remember name association)

• Follow up any email application with a subsequent email/phone call as deemed appropriate timing i.e. one week after initial application.

• Ensure you build face to face relationships with receptionists and consultants, receptionists can be a great source of information and support.

• Ensure your referees are kept informed of what roles and expectations/key issues are likely to be discussed so they can represent you correctly

• Reward yourself for each achievement in your search for the right career.
